Title
Contextualized Math in CTE: A First Step Towards WBL
Session Code
2026
Venue
Phoenix Convention Center
Room
West 301 A/B
Description
WBL is difficult to implement at the 9th and 10th grade level at our high school. However, we have found a way to teach employment skills to our students. Learn about how high school freshman and sophomores in geometry and algebra 1 are integrating their math skills in Construction and in Business. We will look at our school's manufacturing business model and our school's construction model. The outcomes include a student-run manufacturing business and students working on a construction job site while learning employability skills. Come see how we are using Employability Job Cards by doing a sample activity that combines Construction and Geometry. Other outcomes include building a house for a non-profit, increased CTE enrollment, customer service training, and answering the students' question "Where are we ever going to use this?"
