Join us for an energetic look at an emerging learning system that has Accounting and Financial Literacy teachers seeing breakthrough results by using an innovative graphic organizer and uniquely simplistic educational definitions of key financial terms. Based upon research that’s been ongoing for nearly two decades, business, high school and college teachers have been using a diagram called the BaSIS Board to decompartmentalize learning and create engaging lessons that prioritize understanding over memorizing. Named for the Balance Sheet/Income Statement the diagram is a graphical, color-coded general ledger for businesses and/or households, it focuses attention on the ontological meaning of the five elements of accounting & finance, playfully known as RELAX, for Revenue, Equity, Liabilities, Assets and Expenses. Students use physical manipulatives (tickets and buckets) to model business scenarios onto a 3D, popup “BaSIS Board.” The linguistic and visual approach has achieved notable results in business and school settings, including an endorsement from Harvard Business School.
